Inspired by Dain Fagerholm's hand-drawn animation "Creature With Amethyst Gem (Gem Creature)" — an animated, gem-bearing creature whose deep-rooted, glowing-fruit energy I wanted to translate into a tree of life. Original by Fagerholm:

Icon — Christ Pantocrator

Egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed board, in the Russian Orthodox tradition. Inscribed Ὁ Ὤν ("He Who Is") in the cruciform halo.

Painted during an iconography class led by Timur Khairullin at Dreams Gallery, Limassol (location on Instagram).

Process

From pencil sketch on gesso, through gold leafing, sankir underpainting, and successive layers of light, to the finished face.
